What are some general items of information you may need to know?

Absences

If your child is unable to come to school for any reason, please phone the office before 9.00am. Our policy is to ring all families from whom we do not hear to ensure that the children are safe.  You may also text us on our cellphone on 021 035 6725 with any known absences.

Book Club

Children are welcome to buy good paperback books at a reasonable price through Ashton Scholastic. Brochures are sent home twice each year. There is no obligation to buy. Please send order forms and money in named envelopes. The books are distributed as soon as they arrive.

Homework

The aim of homework is to provide a link between school and home where parents are able to help develop their childs skills and understanding. One of the most important things to encourage is a love of reading. Ten minutes spent reading each night will develop childrens skills immensely.

Library

The school library is used by all the children but we encourage them to join the Rotorua Public Library as well.

Lost Property

Lost property is displayed regularly. It is stored in Room 1. Unclaimed items are donated to charity.

Lunches

Children are able to buy lunches each school day. A range of products is available. Please try and send as close to the right amount of money as possible.

Subway lunches can be ordered through the school every Thursday.

Children are able to go home for lunch but parents must notify the classroom teacher on the day.

Maori Language Programmes

Like all state schools we give every child the opportunity to learn about aspects of Maori culture and some Maori language. We have three classrooms where Maori is the main medium of instruction. This caters for children who have usually come from Kohanga Reo and have some grounding in Maori language.

Naming Clothing

Please put your childs name on all items of clothing.

Newsletters

We send out newsletters every TUESDAY. You may also receive notices sent home directly by classroom teachers. Notices can also be received by email by registering on this website.

Pedestrian Crossing

Selwyn School is situated by a very busy road. A number of our children cross Fairy Springs Road and an adult is on patrol every morning from 8.30am to 8.45am and 3.00pm to 3.15pm. Please make sure your child crosses that road between these times.

We ask that parents support our safety rules by not parking on the broken yellow lines. The school reserves the right to note the registration number of any illegally parked vehicle.

We prefer children not to bike to school until they are in Year Four.

All cyclists MUST wear helmets. No bikes are to be ridden inside the school grounds during school hours.

Personal Information

Please tell us if your child has a health condition or if there is a family situation we should know about.

All information will be treated as confidential at your request.

Pre Enrolment Visits For New Entrants

We encourage parents to visit the school with their children several times before the children turn five. This can be arranged through the office 9.30am to 10.30am is the most appropriate time for visits.

Reporting To Parents

There are three scheduled opportunities to discuss your childs progress throughout the year. This includes two written reports and one interview.

School Times

School starts at 8.55am each week day and finishes at 3.00pm.
Interval is from 10.30am to 10.50am and lunch is from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

Special Needs and Special Abilities

We have an extensive programme in place which includes Reading Recovery and individual and small group withdrawal for reading, written language, oral language and maths.

Some of the time is reserved for an enrichment (special abilities) programme.

Sports, Physical Education

Sports and games are a regular part of the school programme. A wide range of Kiwisport activities are taken at school and there are plenty of opportunities for involvement in school and
interschool sports. School teams take part in netball, hockey, miniball, touch, cricket, volleyball, waterpolo, t-ball and softball.

Wet Days

The school does NOT close early on wet days.
