What is our Mission  Statement?

Our Mission Statement is as follows:

Selwyn School is a special community where we respect and care for each other, value learning and do our best.

What is our Motto?

Pai rawa atu i nga mea katoa
The very best in all things.

What values do we want to develop in our students?

We want to develop these values:

  • Care - compassion, sharing with others, care for oneself, and the environment
  • Effort - doing our personal best and developing self management skills
  • Fairness - non sexism, non racism, impartiality
  • Integrity - honesty, kindness, reliability, goodness, trustworthy, being of good character
  • Respect - tolerance, positive interactions, respect for self, others, property and for other cultures.

What are our core teaching beliefs?

How we teach depends on how we think children (and adults!) learn best.

Our teaching is based on these ideas:

  1. All children have the potential and right to make maximum progress in their learning.
  2. Children have individual needs, progress at different rates and learn in different ways.
  3. Children learn best when they feel good about themselves as learners.
  4. Learning best takes place when all children have the social skills to successfully interact with each other.
  5. Children learn best in a positive, secure, challenging environment where they play an active role.
